Acne Treatments

Most teenagers and adolescents understand that acne is a common problem for them but adults are not immune from it.Acne lesions, especially when active and visible, can have a tremendously damaging impact on your self confidence. To try and treat acne successfully, many scientists have spent a huge amount of time and effort searching for an effective acne treatment.

A wide variety of acne treatments

It usually takes some testing and trying different treatments before finding the acne treatment that works best for each and every individual.Fortunately, an ever increasing number of possible choices, now well into the hundreds, exist to help you with treating your acne problem.

The majority of acne treatments will fall into one of these categories:

Mild cleanser - These products are normally readily available over the counter in your local drug store. The mild ingredients they contain will work to cleanse your face of dirt and bacteria, thus tackling a primary cause of acne problems.

Chemical - Some products are available over the counter, some only on prescription, but all are effective in reducing the occurrence of acne by using one of various different chemicals that are successful in eliminating bacteria.Common examples are salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.

Prescription - An expanding range of prescription drugs are available to help treat acne.  These acne treatments vary in how they work and what severity of acne they are able to treat. In order to get a prescription for these medicines you must see a doctor or dermatologist, they are not available over the counter.

Other - Light therapy, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and pulse light treatments are available acne treatments at the moment, but new developments are happening all the time as technology improves, so the next, new technique may not be far away.  Most of these types of acne treatments are available primarily through a doctor, dermatologist, or other skin specialist.

Stay clean, stay clear

Perhaps the most important thing to remember when it comes to acne treatments is to keep your skin clean and bacteria-free.Bacteria are the single most important cause of acne. Keep that under control and your acne will also be easier to control.

Keeping your skin clean, however, does not mean you need to scrub it or rub it heavily. Many people don't realise that scrubbing harder makes it more likely that you will irritate your skin. The consequence of this can be more bacteria and more acne lesions. It seems strange, but when it comes to cleaning your skin, less is more. Wash your skin a maximum of two times a day using the minimum of pressure.

Although there are many different acne treatments available, there are also many different companies producing similar products. If you look closely you will see the same or very similar ingredients in comparable products.A sign of a very good acne treatment is one which allows you to thoroughly clean your face without causing irritation or difficult side effects like, dryness, flaking or itching.

Always be ready to change to a different product if you are experiencing unpleasant side effects with the one you are using.  Regardless of the products you choose to use, remember that it takes time for them to work.It is advisable to use a product for at least a month or so to give it time to work. You always have the option of moving on to something else if you are unhappy with the results you are getting.
