Skin Conditions – Do You Spell It Roseacea, Roscea or Acne Rosacea?

by on 2010/12/07

In our opinion, the skin disease labeled "rosacea" is one of the most misspelled conditions in the dermatology field.  It is often referred to as rosacae, roseca, roseaca, rosacia and a number of derivatives, but the appropriate spelling of this incurable skin disorder is R-o-s-a-c-e-a.

Mistakenly, you might hear this skin condition called acne rosacea because its symptoms (i.e. pimples and pustules) closely resembling the common skin condition known as Acne Vulgaris, meaning 'common acne.'  But the fact is that  rosacea is a unique and different skin disease .  This skin affliction generally affects the skin on the face and is usually comprised of periods of remission followed by flare-ups.  A major difference between acne and rosacea is that rosacea usually commences after the age of 30 and can be contracted by people well into their mid to late 40's.

Common Misspellings of Rosacea

Our studies have shown that approximately 10% of the searches performed on leading search engines by people searching for more information about Rosacea are mis-spelled versions of the exact medical nomenclature.  Compiling a list of the highest incident mis-spellings, you can see the intent of the searcher in their near misses:  rosacia, rosecea, roseacea, roscea, roseaca.

These inaccurate spellings are not the exception.  In fact, they are entered into the largest search engine between 33 (rosacae) and 325 (rosacia) times each day on average.   Even though mis-spellings are discouraged by Google and Yahoo, you will find a number of pages using these incorrectly spelled words to help the rosacea patients who just can't get the spelling quite right.

What Is Rosacea?

Despite how you try to spell out "Rosacea", the effects of the skin condition are relatively consistent.  Even though each person suffering with this skin condition can have slightly different symptoms and various degrees of severity, the disease can generally be diagnosed easily by a certified dermatologist.  The leading symptoms are revealed as a reddening of the cheeks, chin, nose or forehead.  The good news is that the symptoms are transient and periods of remission generally follow exacerbations .

Unfortunately, there is no documented solution for this skin disease.  However, with appropriate treatment and lifestyle adjustments, it can effectively be controlled.   So, whether we spell it rosecea, roscea, or roseca, the symptoms and social effects will still be a hurdle to overcome.
