Blackheads – An Easy Method To Avoid Having Them

by on 2009/04/29

Blackheads are the result of hair follicles that have become blocked by sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. The black colour of blackheads is due to the mixture that is blocking the hair follicle (i.e. oil, and skin cells) being exposed to the air, which causes it to become oxidised. It isn't caused by trapped dirt, as most people believe.

The black head remover method explained below works, but it isn't the best method - the best solution is to not get blackheads in the first place, by getting rid of their cause (i.e. too much oil, and skin cells). To do this, only use products made with natural ingredients, and which are not too astringent. Harsh products deprive the skin of oil, causing it to produce even more sebum, which leads to more blocked follicles.

Only use products to cleanse you skin if they contain natural oils, such as coconut oil and jojoba oil. The reason being that these types of oils are very close to our own natural oils, so they do not block the follicles. A natural exfoliating mask should be used every day to remove any skin cells that have been shedded, before they have the opportunity to block the follicles. Be extremely careful, because over exfoliation will make the problem worse. Also, avoid products containing the following - alcohol, isopropyl mystate, lanolin, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate, propylene glycol, mineral oil and parabens.

Foods To Help Avoid Blackheads
You can reduce the occurrence of blackheads by ensuring you only eat the right foods. By doing this, you will reduce the production of sebum, increase moisture in the skin, and help the generation of fresh skin cells. Avoid cooked carbohydrates and fats, and replace them with fresh fruits, vegetables and raw fats (avocadoes, olives, olive oil etc).

Blackheads and Make-Up
If you wear make up, ensure that any foundations and concealers are non-comedogenic, and oil free. This will help to avoid your follicles from becoming blocked-up. Do not put on make up when your face is sweating. Remove your make up with a cleanser at the end of the day. Keep your make up brushes and sponges very clean, and replace them often. Wash them with mild shampoo once a month, and let dry completely before you use them again.

Black Head Removal
If you want to avoid getting any blackheads, do the following twice a week:

1. Wash the skin using a gentle, natural exfoliating product.
2. Fill a basin with boiling hot water, and a few drops of tea tree oil.
3. Steam your face for about 5 minutes to open the pores, and soften the skin.
4. Apply a clay mask, such as bentonite clay, to absorb the oil in the blocked follicle.
5. Let the mask work for the recommended amount of time (10 minutes to an hour).
6. Rinse off the mask with warm water, and gently pat the skin dry.

If you take heed of the advice above, regarding improving your diet, and looking after your skin, you shouldn't need to use a black head remover method!
